Gifts for Caregivers: Not just for the Holidays!

With the holidays quickly approaching, i have been asked by clients and family members alike what the best gifts for caregivers are this season. After some reflection about all the things caregivers do for the people they are taking care of, i made a few adjustments to my answer. There is no amount of money that will ever fully recognize the amount of stress, love, and care that any family or professional caregiver goes through each and every day. However, here are a few ideas that may help the caregivers in your life feel recognized, appreciated and pampered.

The people that help take care of you day in and day out work very hard to keep you comfortable and often get paid little for what they do. All the caregivers and other employees at your assisted living or retirement home deserve some appreciation. The holidays are as good a time as any to give it to them. Obviously, gifts aren’t one-size-fits-all. Do your best to listen to the caregivers working with you every day and see if they mention anything that could make finding a good, relevant gift for them easier. If nothing seems to come up though, maybe some of these gift ideas for caregivers can help you out.

Thoughtful Gifts For The Caregiver

Sometimes words aren’t enough. These gifts for caregivers will help you express heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to someone caring for a loved one. My work with with the alzheimer’s society inspired me to research a list of thoughtful thank you gifts for caregivers. Real simple is one of my favorite magazines because it’s practical and encouraging. It’s also one of the bestselling magazine subscriptions on amazon! this is a great gift for family caregivers because it gives them time to relax and unwind. It’s also a reassuring gift because it’s filled with ideas to make life simple and easy. A print subscription along with a coffee shop gift card will encourage your caregiver to take time off to refresh and renew herself.

Question: Nursing Home Gift Ideas

Question:

what kind of gift can i get for an 80-year-old woman who thinks she's going into a home for a couple of weeks, but in reality, she's going there to live?

answer:

the gift is not the issue; rather, the issue is whether you plan on telling her the truth or not. In some cases, with dementia patients, residents may hold onto certain ideas and not comprehend the complexity of their situation. My mother, for example, after practical gifts for nurses being in a nursing home for nearly three years, told me that when and if her older sister, who shared a room with her, passed away, she would be ready to come home. At that point, mom was completely dependent on caregivers for daily needs: medication; meal preparation; showering and more.

Question: what are good holiday gift ideas for residents in nursing homes?

answer: it doesn’t matter where you live or how old you are-there’s nothing like a cheerfully wrapped present to brighten your spirits. Residents in nursing homes present some unique challenges in gift-giving, so i’ve created a list that’s received the “seal of approval” from those who work in nursing homes. And my guess is they would make any resident feel special during the season. As you go through this list, consider what it would be like if you and everyone who reads this decided to go out and buy just one extra gift and drop it off (or mail it) to their nearest nursing home to be given to a resident without family or friends.

Jewelry Gift For The Caregiver

A pre-engraved “dementia” 8. 5″ stainless steel medical alert identification bracelet may not be the most comforting gift for people with dementia or memory loss, but it would be extremely valuable for a caregiver! one of the worst fears for the families of people with alzheimer’s disease is getting lost. An identifying bracelet can help them get home safely. Along the same lines, a medicalert safely home bracelet works to help return lost or separated individuals safely to their families. If your person with dementia likes jewelry, she may not even realize the importance of this bracelet. Some alzheimer’s wristbands are beautiful – not like a hospital wristband! but if your loved one would be offended or hurt at receiving a safely home bracelet, then it’s definitely not one of the best gift ideas.

5. Nurse Coffee Mug (12 oz.)

In the words of lorelai gilmore “coffee! coffee! coffee!”

whether you go with classic stainless steel or a modern version more akin to the look of a starbucks cup, nearly every nurse loves coffee (or some other hot beverage) and would appreciate this thoughtful gift. My personal favorite is the bubba travel mug. I have the 34oz version myself and it also works great at keeping water ice-cold for up to 12 hours at a time.
